Alright, so you’ve visually examined your wine and brought out the bouquet with a little swirling. Now it’s time to put your sense of smell to work. Stick your nose in your glass as far as you can – though not so far that you inhale a lovely noseful of wine! – and take a deep, long breath. What images or descriptions do the smell bring to mind? Don’t be afraid to describe exactly what it is; you could smell fruit, fresh grass, leather, tobacco, metal, or a plethora of different things. Even if you can’t identify exactly what you’re smelling, go ahead and say so. Every person’s sense of smell differs just as much as their opinions do, so it’s perfectly all right if your description of the wine’s bouquet are unique to the others around you.
