Black
Coyote is the name given to the union of Dr.
Ernest A. Bates, Dr. Olin Robison, Jack Ruffle, and Stanley
S. Trotman, Jr. They're strategically collaborating their
time, energy, interest, and resources into the Napa Valley
wine industry. Their name, "Black Coyote," represents
the whimsical, yet clever, side of four very prominent gentlemen,
who enjoy the occasional stress release that the name suggests.
Collaboratively, they're ingeniously enjoying the quality
of life that's synonymous with Napa Valley. The pursuit of
fine wine is a passionate mission for each "Black Coyote."
Mayacamas
Vineyards is a wine estate located in the Mayacamas
Mountains which divide the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. The old
stone winery is perched on the edge of a dormant volcano crater,
near the top of Mt. Veeder. Fifty two acres of vineyards are
planted on mountain sides ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 feet
above sea level. Deer, eagles, coyotes and an occasional bear
still inhabit this rugged terrain.
Gargiulo
Vineyards is a small family winery committed
to producing world-class, terroir-driven wine from our two
Oakville estate properties, Money Road Ranch and 575 OVX.
In their annual report Food and Wine Magazine named Gargiulo,
"one of the most notable new wineries on the planet"
and Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate recently noted, "This
is a new discovery for me, these are well-made wines."
Gargiulo
Vineyards - In 2000 Jeff and Valerie Gargiulo
purchased 9 additional acres in Oakville at 575 Oakville Crossroad.
This vineyard, named 575 OVX (Oakville Crossroad) is situated
on the eastern side of Oakville; sandwiched between Rudd and
Screaming Eagle. In the spring of 2001 Gargiulo re-planted
575 OVX to Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petite Verdot.
It is one of the only south facing sloped vineyards in Oakville.
Fall 2004 marked the first harvest off of 575 OVX and in May
2005 the Gargiulo's begin construction on a state-of-the-art
winery.
Stoneheath
Winery - We make our wines in small lots, using
artisan Italian winemaking techniques. Our Nebbiolo is hand-picked
once the sugar hovers around 24 brix. We have found that a
higher sugar level in Nebbbiolo grapes at picking time makes
a resulting wine that is fuller in the mouth.
Whitford
Cellars - Dunc and Pat Haynes are proud of Whitford's
top notch wine making team. Since 1997, Ken Bernards, formerly
with Trouchard, has been making award winning Chardonnay,
Pinot Noir and since 2002, Syrah for Whitford. Ken's wife,
Teresa, formerly with Domaine Carneros, ably assists. Rob
Fischer joined the team in July of 2004 after receiving an
enology degree from Fresno State. For harvest, when things
really get hectic, Ken hires an intern from the "Communicating
For Agriculture Exchange Program". So far we've been
charmed by eager, hard workers from Spain and Chile. All work
together to create the fine wines of Whitford Cellars.
Waugh
Cellars - There is an age-old question that asks,
what is your purpose in life? Make no mistake about Waugh
Cellars purpose; to bring a taste of passion to your life.
Our dream is to share with you our intense love for living,
which is enhanced through wine. Wine is a unique beverage
that stimulates the mind, body and soul of man, creating a
more loving and peaceful way of life. Wine breaks down barriers,
helps build relationships and is a natural compliment to all
meals, which we hope all people are surrounded by friends
and families enjoying a great meal.
Ilsley
Vineyards - Nestled in the fertile hills of Napa
Valley's Stags Leap District lie the Ilsley Vineyards. For
three generations our family has provided grapes for some
of Napa Valley's finest wines. Now after fifty years of farming,
we have hand-selected grapes from our hillside vineyards to
produce our own Cabernet Sauvignon that we believe captures
the essence of the Stags Leap District.
Gustavo
Thrace Winery - We are a boutique winery located
in the beautiful Napa Valley. Under the GustavoThrace label
we currently produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon
Blanc, Zinfandel and Muscat. Under The 3rd Bottle label we
produce both a red and a white Napa Valley table wine - one
of the best finds in the valley! Our tasting room is located
at the Napa Wine Merchants wine store, a collective tasting
room for a dozen boutique Napa wineries, at 1146 First St.,
Napa, Ca. 94559. The telephone number for the store is the
same as the winery.
Saintsbury
- Now at 60,000 cases, Saintsbury remains at the forefront
of the Pinot Noir revolution in California and the constant
evolution in Carneros winemaking. Dick and Dave continue to
inch their way out the limb that they ventured onto in the
early days. However, now it is a place from which they can
continue to innovate yet also peer down from to survey a part
of the California wine industry they helped create and inspire.
Selene
Wines - Selene's output is exclusively focused
on the Bordeaux varietals that thrive in great Napa Valley
vineyards. Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc have been produced since
1991. Cabernet Sauvignon and a Proprietary Red (Chesler) have
been produced since 2002. With each release, Selene's goal
has been to capture forward fruit flavors and vibrancy from
the vineyard, and use minimalist winemaking techniques to
frame the wines with extremely supple textures. The resulting
wines are food-friendly. They are open and accessible upon
release, and yet they have the necessary balance and complexity
to enhance either home cooking or haute cuisine.
Seduction
Wine - If you are in the mood for romance, and
will be visiting Napa Valley with a special person, then this
is the place for you. Visit our private, 40 acre estate overlooking
hundreds of acres of vineyards to the western hills and spend
90 minutes of pure bliss with us. We only offer exclusive,
private tours for couples and small groups. Your tour will
start in the vineyard with a glass of our Chardonnay, where
we will discuss how grapes are grown with organic farming
methods to make voluptuous wine. Inside our winery, lit with
candles and crystal chandeliers, you will taste wine from
barrels, comparing the taste of the different blends and barrels.
Wine making can be discussed in detail, or not, depending
upon your mood.
Pavilion
Winery - The founders of Pavilion believe that
we can put to work our Napa Valley winemaking skills to create
some of the highest quality wines at the by-the-glass price
point. We believe that decades of Napa winemaking experience
will allow us to create a better bottle of wine at a better
price point than what’s generally in the market.
Ristow
Estate Brunno & Urannia Ristow purchased
the property in 1983 and planted the first vines in 1989.
Originally the land was deemed too rocky and difficult to
farm, leading Brunno to name the property Quinta de Pedras,
meaning "Place of Stones" in his native Portuguese.
It took several years and encouragement from neighboring vintner
Gene Trefethen, who extolled the virtues of south facing hillside
land and rocky terrain as a wonderful combination for growing
Cabernet Sauvignon, to convince the Ristows to plant vines.
Random
Ridge - Random Ridge produces fine wines from
vineyards pioneered by the Hawley family in the Mayacamas
mountains of Napa County, California. We also write poetry,
surf, and practice sustainable agriculture.
