Appellation America - If there was any concept that could be concluded from our tasting of Napa Valley wines it was this: There’s a quiet evolution taking place in the Napa Valley. Some producers have taken up the cudgel of terroir-driven wines. The wines are beginning to be ratcheted back through various means both in the cellar and in the vineyard; and equilibrium is returning, especially to the Cabernet Sauvignons that made the appellation . . . more on this story

Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen - Cindy Pawlcyn, James Beard award-winning cookbook author, Chef and Owner of Napa’s beloved Mustards Grill, and co-creator of many renowned Bay Area restaurants, has done it again! Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen, located in charming downtown St. Helena in the Napa Valley, combines the sophistication of a dinner house with the flair of a jazz club to create the perfect upscale eatery and neighborhood hang-out. As with all of Pawlcyn’s endeavors, the food is delicious and heartfelt, the service is unpretentious and warm, and the atmosphere is festive and comfortable. In Pawlcyn’s words, this is "a local joint - hip, casual, not fussy. The food we serve is from our hearts, what we make at home and most like to cook.".

Terra Restaurant - Even San Franciscans claim it’s “worth the pilgrimage” to this “fabulous restored 19th-century stone building” “off the main drag in St. Helena” for Hiro Sone’s “deeply satisfying”, “spectacularly original” New American fare (incorporating Italian, French and Japanese flavors), wife Lissa Doumani’s desserts that “dance on your palate”, the “extensive wine list” and the attentions of an “exceptional” staff; of course, “if you’re already in town, it’s a slam dunk.” As proprietors of Terra, a restaurant steeped in tradition and housed in a century-old fieldstone building in the Napa Valley wine country, and as chefs who are passionate about food, we have thought a lot about what compels us to cook. And what we have come to realize is this: at Terra, we cook from our hearts. That's why we named our cookbook Terra: Cooking from the Heart of the Napa Valley.

Press serves prime dry-aged beef, whole roasted chicken, and other naturally raised birds, leg of baby lamb, wild fish, heritage pork and hand-fed veal, all prepared on the kitchen’s centerpiece, a custom wood-burning grill and rotisserie. Many of the dishes at PRESS will serve two or more and are carved tableside. Side dishes are served in their cooking utensils and are portioned for sharing. Appetizers are simply that…light and simple, just enough to stimulate the appetite. Press is the vision of Leslie Rudd, owner of Rudd Winery and Dean & DeLuca, and partners Pat Roney of Girard Winery and Reuben Katz of the Culinary Institute of America. Rudd says the inspiration for PRESS came during a "lazy" three-hour lunch at a famed Parisian brasserie. "There’s nothing more civilized than good friends, good food, good wine, and the time to enjoy them,” says Rudd.
