Appellation America - If there was any concept that could be concluded from our tasting of Napa Valley wines it was this: There’s a quiet evolution taking place in the Napa Valley. Long Vineyards
- During the 1880s, Italian American homesteaders planted the first vines on the 120-acre Long Vineyards parcel. Prior to Prohibition, 20 acres of Zinfandel provided grapes for St. Helena wineries and, apparently, during Prohibition for black-market brandy. When Chris and Bob Long, Sr. purchased the property in 1966, we found parts of old stills buried in debris piles along with hundreds of bottles and jugs, and old timers in St. Helena recalled for us stories of the streams of buyers from San Francisco and Oakland who came looking for brandy and wine made in these hillsides.

Benessere Vineyards - In 1994, John and Ellen Benish purchased a 42 acre parcel of land in the Napa Valley which included an old winery and vineyard with the idea of making a little bit of wine and establishing a legacy for their children and grandchildren. That old dilapidated winery, phylloxerated vineyard and farmhouse have been replaced by a modern working winery, Sangiovese vineyard and comfortable home. The Benish' passion for winemaking and grape growing stemmed from a family vacation to Europe in the 1980's. There, in the countryside they saw the tradition of winemaking and grape growing which allowed ties from generation to generation to perpetuate an element of quality and tradition.

Cain Vineyard & Winery - is dedicated to our signature Cabernet blend, Cain Five. Composed of the five classic varieties of the Cabernet/Bordeaux family, Cain Five epitomizes the benefits of blending to achieve a complex wine, supple and rich of texture, combining a full, firm structure with a long and subtle finish. In 1980, Joyce and Jerry Cain purchased part of the McCormick Ranch, a homestead dating back to the 1840s. The Cains were in search of a unique mountain property where they could realize their dream of planting the five classical Bordeaux varieties from which to draw one ideally structured wine—a blend of all five varieties.

Charter Oak Winery - Charter Oak Winery is a small boutique producer of one of the most exceptional world-class Zinfandels. Charter Oak wine is unfined and unfiltered. The grapes are fermented on natural yeast. I use tools crafted by my grandfather (Nonno in Italian) to punch down the cap three times a day. I work the must into a foaming lather. No one makes wine quite this way. We believe the secret to our success is the natural fermentation and the punch down of the cap with hand-made wooden tools, which is done religiously over and over. There is nothing quite as beautiful than to see the sun shining down on the purple grape juice as it bubbles to the top. I live for this and it nourishes my soul.

Corison Wines - Cathy Corison produces two limited-production Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons, hand-crafted without compromise from some of the finest vineyards in the Napa Valley. The fruit for the Corison Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the western benchland near Rutherford, where deep, stony alluvial soils promote ideal growing conditions for the Cabernet vine. Formerly noted as one of the great "virtual" Napa Valley wineries, Corison has now built a new barn/winery on route 29 between Rutherford and St. Helena. The winery is situated amidst the vines of Kronos Vineyard, which is the source of Corison's distinctive Kronos Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

Franciscan Oakville Estate - Franciscan Oakville Estate has been making award-winning wines in Napa Valley for over 25 years. Beginning with 240-acres in the heart of Napa Valley's Oakville growing district, Vintner Agustin Huneeus earned a reputation as one of Napa's great innovators with Cuvée Sauvage, Napa Valley's first wild-yeast fermented Chardonnay, and Magnificat, one of Napa Valley's first Bordeaux-style proprietary blends. Agustin Huneeus' passionate belief that great wines are an expression of great vineyards has been the driving force behind the classic Napa Valley wines we produce.

Frias Family Vineyard - Our wine is about differences and a slice of life. We offer a 100% single vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and a microclimate taste of the Spring Mountain Appellation. Frias Family Vineyards was founded with our first official vintage in 1991. We purchased 100 acres in 1977 and planted only 5 acres in 1985. We focus only on producing the finest Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon. Our operation is small and family owned. My wife and grown children help carry out this labor of love by participating in nurturing the vines, blending, bottling and of course quality control!

Grace Family Vineyards - After nearly a decade of growing grapes, Dick and Ann brought their friend, renowned winery architect John Lail, in to design a uniquely charming and evocative building for making wine. The hand carved wooden entrance leads to a small, sculptured stone and wood sanctuary that evokes the kind of serenity and beauty found more commonly in the Buddhist temples of Nepal than in the wineries of California. This winery temple is a testament to a philosophy of living that transcends fine wine as a beverage, making it also a catalyst for change.

Judd's Hill Winery - Napa Valley visitors and friends know the Finkelsteins’ domain to overflow with a hugely personal mix of interests and talents, from Judd’s ukulele playing to Holly’s hula dancing to Art’s pottery and cooking and Bunnie’s love of poetry, tuba-playing and knitting. This array of art and the arts may be unique among Napa Valley winemaking families. "The process of winemaking is extraordinary in my experience," Art says. "It has to be the most complex and challenging of all art forms. I am amazed by it."

Herb Lamb Vineyard - At Herb Lamb Vineyards, we grow and produce Cabernet Sauvignon. Because our hillside property faces northeast and the mountain temperatures are milder, we tend to experience an earlier bud break. While the valley floor lies in a blanket of fog in the early spring, we catch the early sun and the brisk winds blowing through our canyon help to avert any frost. The angle of the last of the summer sun also allows for a longer growing season - we rarely harvest before October, giving the grapes a certain mountain-grown intensity not achieved in vineyards growing on the valley floor.

Heitz Wine Cellars - When Heitz Cellars opened in 1961, the Napa Valley had fewer than twenty wineries. Today there are more than two hundred. The original winery on St. Helena Highway is still open to the public as a sales and tasting room for visitors and is a glimpse into the origins of Heitz Cellars. Within a few years Heitz Cellars had outgrown the original premises and purchased the present 160 acre residence and ranch on Taplin Road, a narrow fold in the hills just east of St. Helena. The home property was originally developed as a vineyard and winery in the 1880s by the Swiss-Italian family of Anton Rossi.
